John Fisher, a builder, and his wife Elizabeth wanted more living space, so they left their small
flat for an old 40-metre-high castle tower. They have spent five years turning it into a beautiful home
with six floors, winning three architectural prizes.
‘I love the space, and being private,' Elizabeth says. 'You feel separated from the world. If I'm in
the kitchen, which is 25 metres above the ground floor, and the doorbell rings, I don't have to answer
it because visitors can't see I'm in!'
'There are 142 steps to the top, so I go up and down five or six times a day, it's very good
exercise! But having to carry heavy things to the top is terrible, so I never buy two bags of shopping
from the supermarket at a time. Apart from that, it's a brilliant place to live.'
'When we first saw the place, I asked my father's advice about buying it, because we couldn't
decide. After paying for it, we were a bit worried because it looked awful. But we really loved it, and
knew how we wanted it to look.'
'Living here can be difficult - yesterday I climbed a four-metre ladder to clean the windows. But
when you stand on the roof you can see all the way out to sea on a clear day, and that's a wonderful
experience. I'm really glad we moved.'

Like schools in Britain and other English speaking countries, those in the U.S have also always stressed
"character" or "social" skills through extracurricular activities, including organized sports. Because most
schools start at around 8 o'clock every morning and classes often do not finish until 3 or 4 o'clock in the
afternoon, such activities mean that many students do not return home until the early evening. There is usually a
very broad range of extracurricular activities available. Most schools, for instance, publish their own student
newspapers, and some have their own radio stations. Almost all have student orchestras, bands, and choirs.
Many different sports are also available and most schools share their facilities - swimming pools, tennis courts,
tracks, and stadiums - with the public. Often the students themselves organize and support school activities and
raise money through car washes, baby-sitting, or by mowing lawns. Parents and local business often also help a
group that, for example, has a chance to go to a state music competition, to compete in some sports
championship, or take a camping trip. Such activities not only give pupils a chance to be together outside of
normal classes, they also help develop a feeling of "school spirit" among the students and in the community.

Most young couples have meals regularly in their parents’ home with little or no pay, and give their
children to the care of old couple free of charge. Investigations have shown that parents of many couples
don’t mind providing meals and caring for their children. However, this practice shouldn’t become an
accepted social custom.
The old couples’ expense on food has already increased while young couples spend more on clothing
and furnishing and less on food. If this trend continues, many young couples might take these privileges for
granted and become more dependent.
It is not the right for young peoples to make the use of the old couples’ love, not only because our
nation is well – known for its special respect paid to the elderly , but also because the young must become
independent. What young people should do is to become more considerate towards their old parents.
After years of hard work, they are worthy of such consideration.

If you are invited to an American friend’s home for dinner, remember these general rules for polite behaviour. First of all, arrive
approximately on time but not early. Americans expect promptness. It will be all right to be 10 or 15 minutes late but not 45
minutes late. Dinner might be over-cooked and ruined by then. When you are invited to someone’s home for a meal, it is polite to
bring a small gift. Flowers or candy are always appropriate. If you have an attractive thing made in your native country, your host
or hostess
will certainly enjoy receiving that gift. What will you do if you are served some food that you cannot eat or you do not like? Do not
make a fuss about it. Simply eat what you can and hope that no one notices it. Be sure to compliment the cook on the food that you
are enjoying. Do not leave immediately after dinner, but do not overstay your welcome, either. The next day, call or write a thank-
you note to say how much you enjoyed the evening.
